110th Annual Tournament a Huge Success
During the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend the Maryborough Golf Club conducted their 110th Annual Tournament. This year there were almost 230 entries from more than 100 different golfers. Players came from all over Australia to take part in the tournament. More than 30 clubs were represented throughout the weekend. The golf tournament at the Maryborough Golf Club has always been an opportunity to play some good golf on a terrific course and of course to socialise and enjoy a well earned break. Many of the golfers return year after year to be involved in the tournament.
Golf events were held from Friday through to Sunday. Due to the outstanding efforts of all the volunteers and staff involved in organising and preparing for the tournament, it was played in great conditions and was a terrific success, one of the most successful ever held.
The first events, on Friday 30th October were Four Ball Better Balls for Women and Men, with big fields enjoying marvellous conditions. Sharlene Devereaux and Kathy Wood won the Women’s event with 50 points and the runners up were Claire Kingston and Debbie Stanaway with 47 points on a countback. The ball winners were Doris Jennings & Julie Walsh and Janne Maggs & Donna Bauer with 44 points. Lorraine Gollop was nearest the pin on the 9th hole, Leanne Burt on the 11th, and Raeleen Brooker was closest on the 13th.
The men’s winners were Rob Young and Mick Cameron with 47 points. Jeremy Maggs and Garry Shepherd were runners up with 46 points. In third place were Anthony Rowe and Jim Shackleton with 45 points. The ball winners were Mark Swift and Peter Kennedy with 45 points, Allan Creed and Anthony Passalick with 44 points, Ross Maggs and Greg Murphy with 43 points, and Rob Carson and Simon Sheed, and Glenn Driscoll and Des Pickford with 42 points.
Nearest the pins were Peter Reynolds on the 9th hole, Jeffrey Savage on the 11th hole and David Maffescioni on the 13th.
Despite the gloomy start on Saturday morning a large field of men turned out for Andrew Maggs Memorial 27 & 18 hole stroke events in A & B Grade. Michael Ryan won the 27 hole A Grade Scratch event with a terrific 106 off the stick from Tim Harmer and Garry Sluce with 110. Adam Bell won the B Grade 27 Hole Scratch Event with a well crafted 123, from Alan McIvor with 124. The A Grade 27 hole handicap section was taken out by Glenn Kramer with 104 nett, from Anthony Passalick with 105 nett. The B Grade section was taken out by Rod McClean with 106 nett from Allan Creed with 106.5 nett. Paul Simmons had a 72 nett to take the A Grade 18 Hole Handicap event on a countback from Runner Up Josh Nalder. The B Grade 18 hole handicap event went to Maurice Boyd with 68 nett, from Rob Clegg with a 70 nett, on a countback from Graham Stuart. James Needham was nearest the pin on the 9th, with Sean Harkin being closest on the 11th green and Simon Sheed on the 13th. Eleven women also contested a Stroke event with Jody Frost winning with 68 nett, closely followed by Donna Bauer with 69 nett. Yvette MClean was Nearest the Pin on the 11th, and Donna Bauer on the 13th.
Despite the tragic accident outside the club on Saturday evening a good field of golfers turned out on Sunday morning for the final events of the tournament, Team Gentsomes competitions. The overall winners were Brett Chaplin, Grant Sluce, Andrew Long & Dave Richards with 144 points. The runners up team included Anthony Passalick, Anthony Rowe, James Needham & Shaun Maver with 137 points. The second runners up team were Riley Ford, Dean Ford, Connor O’Halloran & Stephanie Lierich with 136 pts on a countback to the fourth placed team made up of Michael Hurstville, Zack Hurstville, Bradley Ross & Kevin Newton.
The Nearest the Pin on the 9th was Kevin Newton, on the 11th Stephanie Lierich and Michael Hurstville were the closest, and on the 13th it was Donna Bauer and Lachlan O’Brien. The Nearest the Pin on the 9th over the Tournament was taken out by James Needham who was 40 centimetres from the flag.
Thanks to the work of all the volunteers and staff, and the valuable support of a large number of very generous sponsors, the huge field of golfers from near and far, thoroughly enjoyed the 110th Annual Tournament at the Maryborough Golf Club.
