Course Ratings Changes for the Maryborough Golf Club – Dan Leddin Handicapper
For some time there have been many concerns about the rating of the Maryborough Golf Club, particularly the Men’s Blue Course. I was asked by the Golf Committee to investigate the current status of course ratings. I communicated with Brian Hill, the Play Management and Regulations Coordinator VGA – Golf Australia. He indicated that golf courses are no longer physically rated, but are monitored statistically on request. After number of discussions about our course and particularly the issues caused when visitors come to our course, and when our members visit other courses, Brian undertook a review with data from golflink. As a result of this review he e-mailed this information for the committee to consider…….

Thank you for the phone call this morning. I have received, and had time to review the statistical rating for the Maryborough Golf Course. As mentioned the data used for the Men’s ratings are from 4,019 Visitor rounds and 2,476 member away rounds played between 23/1/2016 & 31/1/2021.
The Women’s ratings are based on 630 Visitor rounds & 665 Member away rounds over the same period.
Note: The White tee is nearly 400m shorter than the Blue tee so a scratch rating of 69 would be appropriate, in comparison to the Blue tee.
If your committee is happy with the recommendations below please let me know and I can update GOLF Link from a date of your choice. The 9 hole ratings would be updated at the same time.
I did forget to mention that should the club wish to start conducting either multi tee competitions or mixed gender competitions I can also rate all tees for both genders at no cost to the club.
|Tee Colour||Par||Current Scratch||Recommended Scratch||Current Slope||Recommended Slope|
|Blue Men||70||71.7 (72)||70.4 (70)||130||130|
|White Men||70||69.8 (70)||69.4 (69)||125||125|

As a result the Maryborough Golf Club Golf Committee has accepted these recommendations and they will come into effect on Monday March 15th. There will be a change to all Men’s playing handicaps on both courses from that date. All male golfers, both members and visitors, will lose the two shots that were added to playing handicaps, as the difference between par and scratch on the Blue Course. Over time it is anticipated that members will regain those shots if that should be their true handicap. The Committee also requested a change to the Blue Course Slope rating from 130 to 127 as we no longer have thick rough we had when the course was originally rated, which has been largely replaced by couch rough out to the tree lines. There will be some short term pain for longer term gain. Please don’t hesitate to ask myself or other members of the Golf Committee about this major set of changes to our playing conditions.
Handicapper, Maryborough Golf Club.
